Roman Polanski honored with top Polish film reward
Roman Polanski
has remained specified 1 of Poland's top film awards in
Krakow
, where he is also facing a
US extradition
request over 1977 charges of having sex with a 13-year-old girl.
The instructor was handed the Against the Current award at the Off Camera film
festival
on Friday.
The 81-year-old, who
raised
up in the city during World War Two, said he was "extremely touched" by the honour.
He is due back in court in
Krakow
for extra hearing on 22 May.
Polanski has been coveted by US police since 1977, when he fled the country
fearing
a lengthy jail sentence after being charged with having sex with a 13-year-old girl.
The Rosemary's

was apprehended in Switzerland in 2009 after travelling to Zurich to pick up a prize at another film festival, but the extradition bid failed and he was eventually allowed to return to his home in France.

"This is my city. Years spent in Krakow certainly shaped my creative depth," supposed the director.
Festival organizers said the Rosemary's Baby director "defies labeling" and has never followed fashion, according to Radio Poland.
"To American cinema he brought European doubts and non-compliance. To European pictures, American admiration, for the viewers, discipline and skill."
Polanski has been to Poland frequent times in recent years and attended an extradition hearing there in February, which was held behind closed doors.
The Adam Easton in Warsaw supposed at the time that many believe the authorities will be reluctant to agree to the US extradition request, as Polanski is regarded as one of Poland's greatest living artists.
He plans to make his next film in the country - anadaptation of Robert Harris's thriller An Officer and a Spy.
